The Mothership is exactly what she's called, a mother, though she doesn't speak throughout most the movie, the mothership is shown to have the traits of an ordinary parent. She treats A-Spen, A-Lan, and A-Li as her own off spring, like when they were stopped and just like any other parent, asked if they had everything ready for their "first day of school".
She also has no problem to teach the three aliens some discipline, giving them all time out of the ship until they learn some manners thanks to A-Li basically demanding other then asking politely to be given sanctuary before the wolves showed up.
